CYCLONE OSEA SWEEPS THROUGH FRENCH POLYNESIA
PAPEETE, French Polynesia (November 26, 1997 - Radio Australia)--- Cyclone Osea has swept through French Polynesia, causing extensive damage on Bora Bora and other nearby islands, although no deaths have been reported.
Emergency services officials in the territorial capital of Papeete say municipal buildings and many houses on Bora Bora were destroyed.
Parts of the main village on the resort island were devastated, with roads blocked by fallen trees and electricity and telephone lines cut. Two women were reported to be slightly injured.
With winds up to 138 miles an hour, a storm alert continues throughout French Polynesia.
