LANDSLIDE ON TAHAA, FRENCH POLYNESIA KILLS AT LEAST 10
PAPEETE, Tahiti (February 6, 1998 - Radio Australia/PIDP/CPIS)---At least ten people have been buried alive in a landslide on the French Polynesia island of Tahaa.
Officials say the tragedy occurred early Friday after two days of non-stop rain brought on by tropical storm Wes.
Part of a hillside collapsed, burying three homes. It is not known how many people were inside when the landslide occurred, but ten bodies, including those of three children, have been recovered.
Located near the resort island of Bora Bora and Raiatea in the Society Islands group, Tahaa, known as "The Vanilla Island," is approximately 155 miles northwest of Tahiti.
