PACIFIC ISLANDS REPORT Pacific Islands Development Program/East-West Center News Release Federated States of Micronesia JAPAN TO PROVIDE SOLAR ENERGY IN FSM A signing ceremony was held at the Federated States of Micronesia (Yap, Chuuk, Kosrae, and Pohnpei) Department of Foreign Affairs by the FSM Government and Japan Government in respect to the Clean Energy by Solar Photovoltaic Project from the Government of Japan that was pledged under the Cool Earth Partnership during the Palm 5 Summit in May of 2009. This project is also a joint effort for the two governments' commitment to the reduction of greenhouse gases under climate change initiatives. In a short statement, Ambassador Sato stated that this project signifies the Government of Japan's continued commitment to contribute to the FSM Government's effort for nation building. In his responding remarks, FSM Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Lorin S. Robert, mentioned to the Government of Japan through Ambassador Sato that this gratuitous assistance will contribute immensely towards our commitment to the mitigation of climate change as well as our desire for clean energy. Witnessing the signing ceremony was the FSM Vice- President, the Honorable Alik Alik, the Governor of Pohnpei, Hon. John Ehsa, the Secretary of the Department of Justice, Hon. Maketo Robert, the Secretary of the Department of Health & Social Affairs, Hon. Vita Skilling, the Acting Secretary of the Department of Resource & Development, Mr. Marion Henry, the Assistant Director of the Statistics, Budget, Overseas Aid and Compact Management Office (SBOC), Ms. Suzanne Lowe, the Second National Communication Coordinator, Mr. Joe Kono, staff of the Department of Foreign Affairs, and the staff of the Embassy of Japan. |
